Major Catholic university in Cebu City, with origins traced to 1595 as the Colegio de San Ildefonso founded by Spanish Jesuits in Cebu — historically among the OLDEST schools in Asia, predating even UST in age though not in continuous-university status (Jesuit expulsion 1769 broke continuity). Reorganised by Vincentians in 1867 as Colegio-Seminario de San Carlos. Transferred to the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) missionaries in 1935.
