Founded 1955 (chartered by Republic Act No. 1387 on 19 June 1955 as Mindanao State University — established by the Philippine government to bring HE access to Muslim Mindanao and southern Philippines; main campus opened 1961 in Marawi City). Major public state university in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur — the main campus of the MSU System (10 constituent campuses across Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago including MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology, MSU-General Santos, MSU-Tawi-Tawi, MSU-Naawan, and others). Chartered 19 June 1955 by RA 1387 specifically to bring higher-education access to Muslim Mindanao and the southern Philippines. ~17,000+ students at the Marawi main campus. Colleges: Agriculture, Arts and Social Sciences, Business Administration and Accountancy, Education, Engineering, Forestry and Environmental Studies, Health Sciences, Law, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Public Affairs, Sports Physical Education and Recreation, Information Technology, and the Institute of Education. Strong programmes in Islamic Studies given its Bangsamoro region positioning. CURRENT CONTEXT (as of 2026): the Marawi campus was directly affected by the 2017 Marawi Siege (Battle of Marawi, IS-linked Maute group conflict) — the campus suffered damage and disruption but resumed full operations by 2018-2019 and continues to be a critical institution for the Bangsamoro region.
