Founded in 1976 and named after Džemal Bijedić — a Bosniak politician and former Yugoslav Prime Minister (1971-1977) who died in a 1977 plane crash. Approximately 3,500 students. 🕯️ Mostar is a divided city — the war's frontline ran through it, and the famous 16th-century Stari Most (Old Bridge) was destroyed by Bosnian Croat forces in November 1993 (it was rebuilt in 2004 and the reconstructed bridge is now a UNESCO World Heritage site). After the war, Mostar developed TWO parallel universities reflecting ethnic divisions: the Bosnian-language Džemal Bijedić University (this institution, serving primarily Bosniak students) and the Croatian-language Sveučilište u Mostaru (next entry, serving primarily Croat students). The two universities are physically close but largely separate — a real and documented challenge to post-war educational reconciliation.
