Founded in 1976 and named after Džemal Bijedić — a Bosniak politician and former Yugoslav Prime Minister (1971-1977) who died in a 1977 plane crash. Approximately 3,500 students. 🕯️ Mostar is a divided city — the war's frontline ran through it, and the famous 16th-century Stari Most (Old Bridge) was destroyed by Bosnian Croat forces in November 1993 (it was rebuilt in 2004 and the reconstructed bridge is now a UNESCO World Heritage site). After the war, Mostar developed TWO parallel universities reflecting ethnic divisions: the Bosnian-language Džemal Bijedić University (this institution, serving primarily Bosniak students) and the Croatian-language Sveučilište u Mostaru (next entry, serving primarily Croat students). The two universities are physically close but largely separate — a real and documented challenge to post-war educational reconciliation.

Founded in 2003 by Serbian-American businessman Slobodan Pavlović in Slobomir (a planned town adjacent to Bijeljina in Republika Srpska, near the Serbian border), Slobomir P University is one of the larger private universities in Republika Srpska. Approximately 2,500 students. Serbian-language instruction. 🕯️ Honest context: Bijeljina was the site of one of the war's earliest documented ethnic cleansings — the 1992 Bijeljina massacre, in which paramilitary forces under Željko Ražnatović 'Arkan' killed dozens of Bosniak civilians and expelled the prewar Bosniak population. The town's prewar demographics changed irreversibly; the university serves the Serb-majority population today.

Founded in 1975, the University of Banja Luka is the flagship public university of Republika Srpska — the Serb-majority entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina — and the second-largest in BiH. Approximately 16,000 students across 17 faculties. Primary language of instruction is Serbian (using both Latin and Cyrillic scripts). Banja Luka is the de facto capital of Republika Srpska. 🕯️ Honest context: Banja Luka was the site of ethnic cleansing of its prewar Bosniak and Croat populations during 1992-95, and several of the famous mosques destroyed during this period (including the 16th-century Ferhat-Pasha Mosque, rebuilt and reopened in 2016) remain landmarks of remembrance. The university today serves the Serb-majority population of the entity; institutional cooperation with Federation BiH universities exists but is limited.

Founded in 1997, the University of Bihać serves the Una-Sana Canton in northwestern Bosnia from Bihać near the Croatian border. Approximately 3,000 students. 🕯️ Bihać was a UN-designated 'safe area' that was besieged throughout the Bosnian War — the establishment of a university here in 1997 was an act of post-war reconstruction and assertion of normalcy after one of the war's most desperate sieges.

Renamed University of East Sarajevo in 2003. Approximately 11,000 students across 17 faculties spread across Republika Srpska. 🕯️ Honest context: the institution's founding is inseparable from the wartime ethnic separation of the original University of Sarajevo. It serves the Serb community of Republika Srpska. Primary language Serbian; both Cyrillic and Latin scripts used.

Founded in 1977, the University of Mostar (Sveučilište u Mostaru) is the only public university in Bosnia and Herzegovina with Croatian as its primary language of instruction, serving the Bosnian Croat community. Approximately 16,000 students. Maintains close institutional links with universities in Croatia (especially Zagreb and Split) and with the Catholic Church (the Catholic Theological Faculty operates in cooperation with the Diocese of Mostar-Duvno). 🕯️ As noted above, Mostar's twin-university structure reflects post-war ethnic divisions in the city's educational system.

Officially founded in 1949 as a modern comprehensive university, the University of Sarajevo (UNSA) traces its institutional heritage to the Gazi Husrev-beg Madrasa founded in 1531 — one of the oldest continuously operating educational institutions in Europe. Approximately 30,000 students across 22 faculties — the largest university in Bosnia and Herzegovina. 🕯️ During the Siege of Sarajevo (1992-1996, the longest siege of a capital city in modern warfare at 1,425 days), the University of Sarajevo continued teaching. Students and faculty crossed sniper alleys to attend classes; many were killed walking to or from campus. This act of academic resistance defined BiH's post-war identity. 🕯️ In August 1992, the Vijećnica (Sarajevo City Hall, housing the University Library) was deliberately shelled and burned by Bosnian Serb forces — approximately 2 million books were destroyed, an act the ICTY characterised as a crime against cultural heritage. The library has since been rebuilt and reopened in 2014. UNSA today serves all three constituent peoples but has a Bosniak-majority student body reflecting Sarajevo's post-war demographics. 🤝 Pakistani context: UNSA maintains exchange partnerships with Pakistani universities reflecting the deep solidarity Pakistan showed to Bosnia during the war.

Founded in 1976, the University of Tuzla serves northeastern Bosnia from Tuzla — the country's third-largest city and historically a salt-mining and chemical industry centre (Tuzla derives from the Turkish word 'tuz' meaning salt, reflecting 600+ years of continuous salt mining). Approximately 12,000 students across 13 faculties. Programmes oriented toward mining, geology, and chemical engineering reflect the region's industrial heritage. 🕯️ Tuzla suffered the May 1995 'Tuzla massacre' when a Bosnian Serb Army shell hit a crowded square, killing 71 young people. The memorial 'Kapija' is near the university. Tuzla was unusual during the war for largely preserving its multi-ethnic character — the university serves Bosniak, Croat, and Serb students together.
