Gandantegchinlen Monastery (founded 1809) was THE ONLY MAJOR MONGOLIAN BUDDHIST MONASTERY TO SURVIVE the 1937-1939 Stalinist Purge that destroyed 700+ Mongolian monasteries — Gandan was preserved in reduced ceremonial status as showpiece for foreign visitors. Buddhist scholastic activity reconstituted at Gandan post-1990 Democratic Revolution.
