Founded in 1834 by lawyer-politician Pierre-Théodore Verhaegen on the principle of 'libre examen' (free inquiry) — explicitly secular and independent of religious authority, in opposition to the dominant influence of the Catholic University of Leuven at the time. ULB became bilingual (French-Dutch) for much of the 20th century until linguistic tensions led to the 1969 split that created the Dutch-speaking VUB. Approximately 38,000 students from 145+ countries. Three Nobel Prize laureates: Jules Bordet (Medicine 1919), Albert Claude (Medicine 1974), Ilya Prigogine (Chemistry 1977). Brussels location provides exceptional access to EU institutions, NATO, and international diplomatic life. ULB is a member of the prestigious League of European Research Universities (LERU).

We list institutions whose accreditation we have verified against a recognized national or international accrediting body. Listing does not vouch for any specific program's recognition by destination-country regulators, individual admissions outcomes, or post-graduation credential transferability.
When you click through to a university's website, you are interacting with that institution's admissions process under their terms. Our responsibility ends at pointing you to a verified-accreditation institution.
