Founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I as 'The College of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Queen Elizabeth near Dublin', Trinity College Dublin is Ireland's OLDEST university and one of the oldest in Western Europe. For most of TCD's history its Catholic students risked excommunication.
