OMAN'S OLDEST modern university and ONLY public national university for 35+ years until UTAS 2020 reorganization. Located on Al-Khoudh campus, Muscat. ~17,000+ students. 9 colleges including Medicine (College of Medicine and Health Sciences — premier Omani medical training, Sultan Qaboos University Hospital affiliation), Engineering, Agricultural Sciences, Education, Arts and Social Sciences, Science, Economics and Political Science, Law, Nursing. CRITICAL CONTEXT: Sultan Qaboos ruled Oman 1970-2020 — overthrowing his medieval-isolated father Sultan Said bin Taimur in 1970 Bloodless Coup, then transforming Oman from country with ~3 schools + ~3 km paved roads + total HE = ZERO into modern state with comprehensive HE system. SQU is his crown educational achievement. Sultan Qaboos died 10 January 2020, succeeded by cousin Sultan Haitham bin Tariq in peaceful transition.
