Founded 1897 (chartered by American Presbyterian missionary WILLIAM M. BAIRD as Soongsil Academy in Pyongyang — KOREA'S FIRST MODERN UNIVERSITY; closed 1938 by Japanese; revived Seoul 1954). KOREA'S FIRST MODERN UNIVERSITY by founding date. Chartered 1897 by American Presbyterian missionary WILLIAM M. BAIRD (1862-1931) as SOONGSIL ACADEMY (崇實學堂 = "Academy of Reverence for Truth") in PYONGYANG (now North Korea capital). Closed 1938 by Japanese colonial authorities for refusing Shinto shrine worship. Revived in Seoul 1954 post-Korean War. ~15,000+ students. Christian-foundation private.
