Renamed 1995 after SHAKARIM QUDAIBERDIULY (1858-1931) — Kazakh poet, philosopher, historian, STUDENT OF ABAI QUNANBAIULY, considered second-most-important Kazakh Islamic thinker after Abai. CRITICAL CONTEXT: Shakarim was KILLED BY SOVIET OGPU (secret police) IN 1931 during forced collectivisation and the early Asharshylyk famine period; rehabilitated 1988. ~8,000+ students.
