Chartered 5 October 1942 by Mongolian People's Republic government as Mongolia's FIRST university — established DURING WORLD WAR II with Soviet assistance when Mongolia was the SECOND COMMUNIST COUNTRY IN HISTORY (after USSR, 1924-1990 MPR). Originally with 70 students, 1 building. ~18,000+ students. 8 schools/faculties. Strong humanities, social sciences, languages, sciences. CRITICAL HONEST CONTEXT: NUM was founded just 3 years AFTER end of the 1937-1939 STALINIST GREAT PURGE in Mongolia — among 20th-century's most catastrophic per-capita political killings (~30K-100K killed = 3-10% of total Mongolian population; ~17K Buddhist monks executed; 700+ monasteries destroyed).
