Founded 1932 (chartered as Kabul University by King Mohammed Nadir Shah; predecessor: Faculty of Medicine 1932) — Afghanistan flagship and oldest modern university. Afghanistan's flagship and oldest modern university, located in the capital Kabul (Jamal Mina campus). Chartered 1932 by King Mohammed Nadir Shah, growing from the Faculty of Medicine (1932) and subsequent additions of Law and Political Science (1938), Sciences (1942), and other faculties. Pre-revolution and pre-conflict, KU was a major regional university serving the Persian-speaking world. ~20 faculties today including Engineering, Sciences, Medicine, Agriculture, Law and Political Sciences, Letters, Economics, Education, Islamic Studies, and Computer Science. CURRENT OPERATIONAL STATUS (as of 2026): KU continues operating under the Taliban Ministry of Higher Education. FEMALE STUDENTS HAVE BEEN BANNED from attendance since the December 2022 Taliban edict. Major faculty exodus has occurred since 2021. Curriculum has been revised to emphasise Islamic content. International recognition of degrees has been significantly affected. Afghan female students seeking higher education currently must look to: (1) AUAF online programmes from Afghanistan, (2) AUAF Doha campus, (3) universities in Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, or Western countries.
