Founded in 2006, the Juraj Dobrila University of Pula is named after Bishop Juraj Dobrila (1812-1882), a 19th-century Istrian intellectual who championed Croatian cultural rights under Habsburg rule. Approximately 4,000 students. Located in Pula — the largest city of Istria with extensive Roman heritage (the Pula Arena is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world, capacity 23,000). Pula has a significant Italian-speaking minority; the university uniquely offers programmes in Italian alongside Croatian.
