Founded 1905 (chartered as Fudan Public School / 复旦公学 by Ma Xiangbo and other Chinese intellectuals who broke from the Jesuit Aurora University to establish a Chinese-administered modern university; the name Fudan / 復旦 comes from the Confucian Book of Documents passage "日月光华, 旦復旦兮" meaning "the sun and moon shine in turn, the morning sun returns morning after morning"; renamed Fudan University 1917; reorganised after 1952 through merger with St. John's University Shanghai and other institutions). China's premier comprehensive research university in Shanghai, located at the Handan Road main campus in Yangpu District with additional Fenglin (medical) and Jiangwan campuses.
