Founded 1922 (as Uganda Technical College, a small technical school); became Makerere College in 1949 (affiliated with University of London); part of the University of East Africa federation 1963-1970 (with University College Dar es Salaam and University College Nairobi); full independent Makerere University from 1970. Uganda's flagship and oldest university, located on Makerere Hill in Kampala. Founded 1922 as Uganda Technical College — a small technical school under the British Colonial Administration. Reorganised as Makerere College in 1949 with affiliation to the University of London. From 1963 to 1970, Makerere was part of the University of East Africa federation alongside University College Dar es Salaam (now UDSM, see UNI_0506) and University College Nairobi (now UoN).
