Major public research university located in the historic Cape winelands town of Stellenbosch (Western Cape), 50km east of Cape Town. Founded 2005 (by merger of Rand Afrikaans University, Wits Technikon, and Vista University Soweto/East Rand campuses, under the post-apartheid HE restructuring). Major comprehensive university located in Johannesburg (Gauteng), formed 2005 through the post-apartheid higher-education restructuring as a merger of three predecessor institutions: Rand Afrikaans University (RAU, founded 1968), Technikon Witwatersrand (founded 1925 as the Witwatersrand Technical Institute), and Vista University's Soweto and East Rand campuses (Vista University was a multi-campus institution serving township students 1981-2004). As a 'comprehensive' university model, UJ offers both traditional academic and career-oriented vocational programmes.
