Renamed University of Madagascar in 1961 and operated as a unitary national university with six branches in Antananarivo, Antsiranana, Fianarantsoa, Toamasina, Toliara, and Mahajanga. The branches became independent universities in 1988, leaving the original Antananarivo institution as Université d'Antananarivo.
