Founded 16 December 1955 (as Institute for Advanced Studies); renamed University of Madagascar 1961; reorganised under current name with regional branches becoming independent universities 1988. Madagascar's flagship and oldest higher-education institution, located in the capital Antananarivo. Founded 16 December 1955 by the late-colonial French administration as the Institute for Advanced Studies (Institut des Hautes Études) — Madagascar gained independence in 1960. Renamed University of Madagascar in 1961 and operated as a unitary national university with six branches in Antananarivo, Antsiranana, Fianarantsoa, Toamasina, Toliara, and Mahajanga. The branches became independent universities in 1988, leaving the original Antananarivo institution as Université d'Antananarivo. Main campus at Ankatso (Campus Universitaire d'Ankatso), Ambohitsaina. Address: BP 566, Antananarivo 101. Selective admission policy based on entrance examinations. Runs the Museum of Arts and Archaeology. With MESupReS, oversees MadaRevues — a national repository of Malagasy scientific journals. Notable alumna/alumni include former President Hery Rajaonarimampianina (2014-2018). Primary languages of instruction are French and Malagasy.
