Founded on 3 May 1837 by royal decree of King Otto — just seven years after Greek independence — NKUA is the OLDEST university in the modern Greek state, the eastern Mediterranean, and the Balkans. Named for the nation (Ethniko = National) and for Ioannis Kapodistrias, Greece's first Governor (1828-1831) — making this 'the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens'. Approximately 65,000 students across 35 departments in 9 schools — Greece's largest research university and consistently QS top 300-500 globally. **Significant scientific and intellectual legacy across nearly two centuries**: founders and faculty include essentially every figure of modern Greek scholarship, literature, and science. Constantine P. Cavafy briefly attended; Eleftherios Venizelos (legendary modernising prime minister) was an honorary professor; Giorgos Seferis (Literature Nobel 1963) and Odysseas Elytis (Literature Nobel 1979) — Greece's two literature Nobel laureates — were both NKUA-affiliated. Beautiful neoclassical main building on Panepistimiou Street (Theophil Hansen, 1864) is a Athens landmark. ⚠️ NOTE: NKUA was MISSING from the AlmiStudy collector file — added as critical curator entry given its status as Greece's flagship and oldest university.

Founded in 1837 (same year as NKUA — also by King Otto's royal decree) as the Royal School of Arts, becoming NTUA in 1914. Known affectionately as 'Metsovio Polytechneio' after a major bequest from the Metsovo benefactors. Approximately 12,000 students. Greece's principal technical university. 🕯️ ESSENTIAL HONEST CONTEXT — THE ATHENS POLYTECHNIC UPRISING (17 NOVEMBER 1973): The NTUA campus was the site of the Athens Polytechnic Uprising — one of the most important moments of resistance in modern Greek history. Students occupied the campus on 14 November 1973, broadcasting from a makeshift radio station against the military junta that had ruled Greece since 1967. Tens of thousands of Athenians joined in solidarity outside. On the night of 17 November 1973, the junta sent a tank that crashed through the main gate, and the army fired into the crowds. **At least 24 people were killed, hundreds injured.** The crushing of the uprising precipitated the junta's collapse just eight months later (July 1974) and the restoration of democracy. The destroyed NTUA front gate has been preserved exactly as it was that night — a permanent memorial. 17 NOVEMBER is now a Greek national day of remembrance; on this day annually, students march from NTUA to the US Embassy (US having supported the junta). Every Greek student knows this history. The Polytechnic stands as a global symbol of student resistance to dictatorship.
