Founded 1909. The original Université d'Alger is the oldest university in Algeria. In 2009, under Executive Decree 09-341, it was reorganised into three successor institutions (Algiers 1, 2, 3). Algiers 1 (Benyoucef Benkhedda) is the legal continuation and comprises Law, Medicine, Pharmacy, and Islamic Sciences. Tutoring primarily in Arabic with French widely used at faculty and graduate levels.

Founded December 20, 1967 (originally Université d'Oran al-Saniya). The first university founded in Algeria after independence and the flagship of western Algeria. In 2014, the original University of Oran was split into University of Oran 1 (Ahmed Ben Bella, Es-Sénia campus) and University of Oran 2 (Ahmed Benahmed). Oran 1 has 5 faculties and 2 institutes covering medicine (3 branches), natural sciences, humanities, Islamic sciences, and exact sciences. ~25,000-29,999 students. Named after Algeria's first post-independence president.
Founded April 25, 1974 (Ministerial Decree 74-50). The first university established in independent Algeria and the country's largest at 105 hectares, with 8 faculties (Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Electronics & Computer Science, Mechanical & Process Engineering, Earth Sciences/Geography/Spatial Planning, Civil Engineering) and ~20,000 students. Campus designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. Language of instruction switched from French to English in 2025. Ranked 2nd in Algeria, 91st in Africa (US News 2025).
